The road to a climate-neutral Berlin

In the next few decades, Berlin will be evolving into a climate-neutral city and, in this way, is reacting like other great metropolises in the world to the issue and challenges of climate change. The Berlin Energy and Climate Protection Programme 2030 approved by the Berlin Senate in 2017 and the Feasibility Study: Climate-Neutral City Berlin 2050 were developed on the basis of scientific recommendations and the results of extensive public participation.

The climate protection measures are intended, among other things, to bring about a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions in the city in terms of energy and traffic. BEHALA, owned by the state of Berlin, is naturally pursuing the same goals and putting the focus on climate-neutral solutions in all of its work and projects.

For example, the largest electric lorry approved for road use has been driving around Berlin since 2014. The vehicle operated by BEHALA was the first of its kind on the streets of the capital. The electric lorry was deployed in the scope of the KV-E-Chain showcase project and now predominantly transports containers that arrive by train at Berlin Westhafen within the port itself.

In the same vein, an electric road-rail vehicle for the shunting of railway wagons has also been in use at Westhafen since 2014. When it comes to procuring new vehicles and mobile handling equipment, emission-free options are also chosen as far as possible. The entire forklift truck fleet has already been successfully switched over to electric vehicles.

Since January 1st, 2021, BEHALA has been using green electricity, which is produced entirely from renewable energy sources. The electricity product “Klima Natur” is based on guarantees of origin that meet the requirements of the European Directive 2009/28 / EC.
