- Digital twins offer considerable potential for innovation in Germany’s port industry by enabling efficient planning and control and increasing port productivity and competitiveness.
- The aim is communication tailored to the situation and location, enabling greater efficiency and lower emissions. The potential will be evaluated in the test area, and a prototype browser-based software solution will be developed.
- The approach involves developing a digital twin with the core functions of transparency, optimisation and automation, integrating different data sources and automated communication with lorry drivers.
- The project helps reduce emissions and improve traffic flow. The transferable solutions can also contribute to modernising Germany’s port industry.
- Piloting a digital twin aims to avoid long waiting times, heavy transport volumes and capacity bottlenecks, while providing transparency and simulation-based support for decision-making.
- Testing and demonstration will focus on optimising incoming traffic management for the container terminals at Berlin’s Westhafen.
Project period: 1 January 2024 – 31 December 2026
