With 130 employees and an annual cargo handling and transport volume of 4.5 million tonnes, BEHALA is one of Germany’s largest inland port operators. The exceptionally well-connected Westhafen with its high-capacity container terminal, along with Südhafen in Spandau and Hafen Neukölln, provides the foundations for sustainable logistics solutions into the future.

Handling bulk, general & heavy cargo

Our heavy-lift crane has a lifting capacity of up to 350 tonnes, rising to 500 tonnes for tandem lifts. This enables us to handle heavy and general cargo and all types of project cargo at Westhafen – particularly power station turbines, generators and industrial equipment. Fixed cranes and several mobile cargo handling machines are used flexibly to handle a wide range of bulk goods.

Container logistics

Our trimodal Westhafen city freight centre is equipped with two container gantry cranes, a reach stacker, an empty container handler and two 350-metre railway tracks. Spaces are available for refrigerated and hazardous goods containers. The empty container depot also has a 120-metre rail connection and capacity for 800 TEU of empty containers.

Container block trains arrive daily from Hamburg and Bremerhaven as part of seaport hinterland transport. Our container terminal is open continuously from Sunday at 21:00 until Saturday at 06:00.

Heavy cargo shuttle with GSL Ursus

For heavy cargo transport, BEHALA operates its own roll-on/roll-off heavy cargo barge (length × width: 64.50 m × 9.50 m), with a maximum draught of 3.50 m and a carrying capacity of 1,200 tonnes.

Eight ballast tanks in the double bottom and along the sides provide a ballast capacity of 800 tonnes. This allows difficult-to-transport goods to be delivered safely, significantly reduces heavy goods traffic in Berlin and contributes to environmental protection by transporting cargo on water.
