BEHALA connects water, rail and road at three modern ports in Berlin
Capital city
logistics
BEHALA operates Berlin’s centrally located trimodal freight transport centres – WE ARE THE PORT!
We ensure that trade flows reach everyone in Berlin, while partnering with industry to provide transport solutions around the world.
With 130 employees and an annual cargo handling and transport volume of 4.5 million tonnes, BEHALA is one of Germany’s largest inland port operators. The exceptionally well-connected Westhafen with its high-capacity container terminal, along with Südhafen in Spandau and Hafen Neukölln, provides the foundations for sustainable logistics solutions into the future. Our work goes beyond cargo handling and leasing commercial premises: owned by the State of Berlin and therefore independent, BEHALA is a modern, customer-focused logistics service provider with almost 100 years of experience – delivering capital city logistics. Together with our partners and customers, we develop innovative logistics concepts, whether for handling bulk, general or heavy cargo weighing up to 500 tonnes, environmentally sound propulsion technologies for port and regional railways, or the planning, conversion and leasing of logistics properties.

Four locations,
many buildings
We manage a total area of almost 70 hectares across four locations within Berlin:

A trimodal port in Berlin-Spandau. 180,000 m² on the River Havel, divided into upper and lower port areas, with cranes for bulk and light general cargo, warehouses and outdoor storage areas.
Construction work in the lower port and on the railway infrastructure began in late 2023. Find out more about the project

A trimodal port in Berlin-Mitte, between the Westhafenkanal and the Berlin-Spandauer-Schifffahrtskanal
410,000 m² of space, two harbour basins, a container terminal, cranes and railway infrastructure, plus outdoor storage, silos and warehouses available with logistics services or for lease

Our history
Milestones in our development:
Construction of the third harbour basin and the quay on the Berlin-Spandauer-Schifffahrtskanal
After the end of the Second World War, 60% of the facilities at Westhafen and 80% at Osthafen are destroyed
Opening of the RoRo ramp on the Charlottenburger Verbindungskanal and start of turbine transport using the GSL Ursus heavy cargo shuttle
